Travelling by train


You can look forward to the most comfortable and pleasant trip through Central Asia on offer. You will travel through Uzbekistan, a land full of the remnants of its glorious past, on to the Kyrgyz Lake Issykkul and further to Almaty in Kazakhstan.

During your journey you will see all of the highlights of the culture and nature of this region. The centers of Islamic culture on the Silk Road will be the focus of your trip. While travelling you will not only view the inanimate monuments of world history, but also experience a varied "People and Places" program including regional culinary specialties in stylish surroundings (such as the court of a Koran school), carpet production and silk making, the presentation of national costumes, and performances of local dances and music.

You will be travelling safely and comfortably along the Silk Road in the fully air conditioned special train without having to give a thought to the hygiene problems typical of the region.


Programme

Day 1. Almaty Arrival to Almaty. Transfer to the railway station Almaty-2.

Day 2. Tram At night the train leaves for Bukhara. On board we will greet you with a welcome drink and a fruit buffet. Afterwards a meal consisting of the local specialties and information about the geography, history and culture of the region will be provided.

Day 3. Bukhara Bukhara, is the former trade and caravan city of the Samanides. Bukhara has 1001 historical monuments, 400 of which are located in the center. You will see the bazaar under domes of the moneychangers, carpet and hat makers, the Kaljan Minaret (almost 50 meters high) and the "Labi House at the Pond" ensemble.

Day 4. Bukhara You have the opportunity to take part in a full-day tour with lunch. In the morning we take you to the Medresse Miri Arab, the mausoleum of the Samanides and the Ark fort. In addition you will see the coronation hall of the emirs here.

Day 5. Urgench and Khiwa Breakfast on board, trip via Amu-Darja. Arrival in Urgench and Bus transfer to the Oasis Khiwa with city wall and old town, a tale from 1001 Nights and world heritage site. Walking tour of palaces, mosques, minarets, mausoleums, a fantastic panorama from the top of an minaret.

Day 6. Samarkand Lecture about the land and its people on board. After lunch you reach Samarkand and check in at your hotel for three nights and afterwards go to the impressive Gur Emir Mausoleum.  

 

Day 7. Samarkand.
City tour including the Registan Square. After lunch pay a visit to a silkcarpet manufactory, to the lively bazaar with a stop for refreshment in a typical tea shop.


Day 8. Samarkand.
In the morning we offeryou a guided tour of important historical monuments, the observatory of Ulug Beg, the ruins of the Bib-Khanum Mosque with a splendid panorama of the city and tour of the inside of the palace-like Gur Emir Mausoleum. Excursion to Shahrisabs, Tamerlane's place of birth, and to 14th and 15th century monuments.

Day 9. Shymkent
The old trading town of Symkent, where a one-hour walk and kazak folklore concert are planned. For the next several hours you can marvel at the imposing Tien Shan
foothills.

Day 10. Lake Issyk-Kul A one-hour boat trip (depending on the weather) with a commentary about the flora and fauna. At noon departure of our special train to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, by way of a wild gorge. In the evening a sightseeing tour of the city and kyrgyz folklore concert.

Day 11. Almaty Sightseeing tour of the city and a drive to Medeo at a height of 1,700 metres and its 10,000 square metre ice stadium. An opportunity for a short hike in a wonderful landscape, then the evening meal in a typical jurt before returning to the hotel.

Day 12. Departure.
