Kazakhstan declared the independence on 16 December 1991.
The Republic of Kazakhstan is located in the Central Asia between the Ural and bottom stream of the Volga in the West up to the Altai mountains, and from the Siberian lowlands in the North up to the Tien-Shan mountains in the South. The territory of Kazakhstan is huge and more than 2.7 square kilometers that is approximately equal to the territory of the whole Western Europe. In terms of this index the land area in Kazakhstan occupies the 9* place in the world. The extend of the territory makes about 2800 km from west to east, 17600 km from north to south.

The Republic borders Russia to the North, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to the South, China to the East and the Caspian Sea to the West.

The total length of this borders exceeds 15000 km.

Nature: The landscape of Kazakhstan is diverse. There is a forest-steppe in the North, semi-desert and desert in the South. Plains and lowlands occupy main Part of Kazakhstan's territory. Pricaspian and Turan lowlands are located in the west part of the Republic. Central part of country is occupied by small hills of Kazakh Melkosopochnik. In the North there located southern part of West-siberian plain. Eastern and South-Eastern parts occupied by mountains of Altai, Tarbagatai, Dzhungar Alatau, North and West parts of Tien Shan mountains. The steppe zone covers approximately one third of the territory of the country, while the semi-desert region, which extends from the Caspian Sea to the Alatau Mountains, makes up 15% of the Republic's land area. The highest point in Kazakhstan - Khan-Tengri Peak - is 7,010 metres above sea level, while the lowest - the Karagie depression east of the Caspian Sea - is 132 metres below sea level.

Wildlife: Kazakhstan provides a home for many types of wildlife: 158 species of mammals, 485 birds, 52 reptiles, 12 amphibians and 150 fishes, 19 animals and 23 birds are listed in the International Red Book of rare and endangered species.
In Kazakhstan there are over than 6000 species of plants. There are about 30000 species of insects.

Climate: Kazakhstan's climate is continental.

Average January temperatures range from -19 C in the North to -3 C in the South, temperatures in northern regions may fall as low as 40 C or below.

July temperatures are 15 C in the North and 30 C in the South. The country enjoys about 250 days of sunshine per year. The best times to visit are late spring, summer and early autumn.

Transport infrastructure: Chief types of transport are railway and car. Exploited length of railwaies is about 1500 km and highway - about 100 000 km. Largest oil pipelines are Omsk - Pavlodar - Shymkent; Aktau - Atyrau - Samara and gas pipelines -Janaozen - Makat - Saratov; Bukhara - Oral; Tashkent - Almaty. Large ports on Caspian sea are Bautino and Aktau. Navigation is on Ertis (Irtysh), Zhaiyk ( Ural), Ile rivers.
Airlines link Astana and Almaty with all regional centres and many cities of the CIS and
the world. Largest airports are those of Astana, Almaty. Karaghandy, Aktobe. Space launch
Baikonyr located in Kyzylorda region near city Baikonur.
